The Frustration of Work-Life Integration

There’s a term I coined called “Functioning Traumatist.” And what does this mean? It’s someone who excels professionally while carrying unresolved trauma. And that was me for a long time.

On the outside, I had it all. My career in the television industry was flourishing, and I was working with top professionals both locally and internationally. People saw me as successful, probably using me as a prayer point. But beneath the surface, I was struggling. I was so focused on being a professional powerhouse that I neglected my personal life, which includes the emotional, spiritual, and relational well-being—things that don’t show on paper.

Here’s what I realized: when you’re dysfunctional inside, it eventually shows up on the outside. And for many of us, this dysfunction manifests as frustration with work-life integration.

Let me tell you some of the things I used to do. I felt like I had to toughen up to survive in a male-dominated industry. I became harsh, always on guard, thinking it was the only way to be taken seriously. I even adopted habits like smoking and drinking because I thought that’s what successful people in my industry did. But it wasn’t me. I was losing myself.

I know what it’s like to juggle work and personal life and feel like you’re not doing enough in either area. I remember waking up at 5 AM to manage everything—being a mom, a boss, a partner—and feeling overwhelmed. I wasn’t delegating, and I wasn’t trusting others to handle things. I was drowning.

Sound familiar? If you feel undervalued at work, struggle to balance your career and personal life, or find it hard to manage relationships, you’re not alone. These are signs of unresolved emotional issues that we tend to bury. But no matter how far you’ve buried it, it shows up eventually.

Here are some of the frustrations I’ve observed in myself and my clients and ways by which everyone overcame:

  1. Most times we get frustrated because we feel undervalued at work. We feel like our efforts go unnoticed, and no matter how much we give, we don’t receive the recognition or validation we need. But therapy can help you explore the root of these feelings, building self-esteem and teaching you to rely on self-validation rather than external approval. It also helps reframe your expectations in the workplace, making sure you’re motivated by personal growth rather than external recognition.
  2. The overwhelming task of balancing professional responsibilities with personal life can leave you feeling exhausted and out of control but with therapy you can learn how to set healthy boundaries and practice time management.
  3. Trauma can strain your relationships, making it hard to connect with colleagues, family members, or even yourself. By understanding the source of past hurts, you can learn to rebuild trust, communicate better, and foster stronger, more meaningful connections.
  4. Juggling too many responsibilities at once, both at work and at home, leaves you feeling burnt out and scattered. Therapy can teach you how to prioritize tasks, focus on what’s important, and say no when necessary. It helps in reducing the feeling of overwhelm and improves your ability to concentrate on one task at a time, preventing burnout.
  5. Constantly questioning your worth and relying on others for reassurance keeps you from believing in yourself. Therapy works on building confidence and self-worth from the inside out.
  6. Struggling to pursue your personal ambitions while managing the responsibilities of a full-time job leaves you feeling conflicted and stretched thin. Therapy can guide you in creating a balanced life where your professional and personal goals coexist. It teaches how to align your career with your values, ensuring that your ambitions don’t compromise your well-being.
  7. Constant stress and anxiety take a toll on your productivity and mental health, affecting your overall quality of life. Therapy provides tools like mindfulness and stress management techniques, helping you cope with anxiety and maintain a healthier emotional balance. It also addresses the root causes of chronic stress and guides you toward sustainable well-being.

Therapy provides a safe, non-judgmental space where you can explore these frustrations, understand their root causes, and develop practical strategies to address them. It supports personal growth and equips you with tools to manage work-life integration with greater balance and ease.
