Effective Communication; Better Results

As humans, we are drawn to one another and communicate with each other in a variety of capacities. There are several roles that each individual fills daily, depending on the context of an interaction. What every interaction has in common is the need for clear and effective communication.

Effective communication involves sending your message to the other person and ensuring that the aim of the message is achieved and void of misunderstanding. It is more than just exchanging information. It’s about understanding the emotion and intentions behind the information.

For effective communication to take place, three things are to be considered:

  1. Your intention: Every message conveyed has emotions tied to it. The intention in communication reveals what the sender of the message wants to communicate. For instance, if you’re angry with someone, the tone, and body language you use directly sends a message to the person making him or her aware of your anger towards him or her.
  2. The right time: Effective communication is bound to the right timing. You need to understand the appropriate time to communicate a message.
  3. Your Feedback or Response: Effective communication should be both ends communicating not one-sided. Also take note, that for you to effectively communicate your emotions to others you have to show that you are really interested in the conversation. As your bodily and facial expressions will help to tell more of what you are discussing.

Effective communication can deepen your connections to others, build greater trust and respect, and improve teamwork, problem-solving, and your overall social and emotional health.
