I know you may not believe this at first, but personally, I’ve never fully agreed with the word stress. I often feel like the word was created to give us a name for a feeling we experience under pressure – a feeling we can’t easily explain, so we just call it “stress.”
But here’s the truth: many times, what we call stress is actually stretching.
Think about it. Your boss assigns a task that challenges you, or requires you to do something differently than you’re used to. And immediately, your mind declares, “I’m stressed!” But are you? Or are you simply being stretched beyond your comfort zone – invited to grow, expand, and step into something new?
Stretching is uncomfortable, yes. But it’s not always harmful.
Trauma responses, on the other hand, are deeper. They don’t just stretch you, they trigger you. And that’s a completely different experience.
Your brain holds onto past pain. It remembers. It stores it. And when you face a situation that reminds your nervous system of that old wound, the body reacts sometimes dramatically.
Has this ever happened to you?nYou don’t want to do something, maybe show up to work, have a difficult conversation, or clean that wardrobe you’ve been avoiding for months. You whisper to yourself, “This is going to be so stressful.” Suddenly, you feel sick. A headache appears. Fatigue sets in. You find yourself lying down, telling yourself you’ll “try again later.”
But what if the real issue isn’t the task but the meaning your mind has attached to it?
Your mind is trying to protect you from something it has registered as painful. Your body follows the instruction. But imagine walking up to that same wardrobe and saying:n“You know what? I’m going to clean you and I’m going to enjoy it.”
How do you think your body would respond then?
Here’s the underlying truth: We all have trauma responses. And they’re not signs of weakness- they’re signals. Signals that something inside you is asking to be acknowledged, healed, and released.
And you don’t have to figure it out alone.
If your body has been crying out for help, it’s time to listen.
Name it! Heal it! Deal with it!
