Perfection is Not a Thing

Have you ever felt like no one truly understands your struggles? If you are a stepmom, you may often feel this way. The world rarely acknowledges the challenges you face. Society sets unrealistic expectations, urging you to fit into a role that is impossible to perfect. But here’s the truth: perfection is not a thing. And that’s completely okay.

One of the biggest hurdles for stepmoms is the immense pressure to be perfect. For years, Hollywood has portrayed stepmothers as villains who are cold, uncaring, and undeserving of love. In cultures like Nigeria’s, this stereotype is even more deeply ingrained. The weight of proving yourself can be overwhelming, making you feel as if you must go above and beyond just to earn love and respect.

Sometimes this pressure isn’t just from external sources, it can come from within. The desire to be better than the biological mother, the need to gain approval, and the pain of hearing phrases like, “You are not my mother!” can take a toll on your confidence. Over time, these experiences can lead to self-doubt and feelings of inadequacy.

Step-parenting can sometimes feel isolating, as if no one truly understands what you’re going through. The fear of rejection from your stepchildren, misunderstandings with biological parents, and societal judgment can make you feel alone in your journey.

But here’s what you need to know: You are not alone, and you don’t have to do this by yourself.

One of the most life-changing realizations in my stepmom journey was discovering that support exists. At first, I joined groups that were filled with negativity and resentment, which only drained me further. But I knew I needed something different, something positive. I sought out mentors, attended therapy, and connected with uplifting people who encouraged my growth and well-being.

If you feel alone in your step-parenting journey, I invite you to be part of my community (Owning My Greatness) specially created for stepmoms. There is strength in connecting with those who understand your struggles and are committed to growth and healing. Surround yourself with people who remind you that you are doing your best, and that is more than enough.

Your role as a stepmom is important. The love and care you pour into your family make a difference, even if it’s not always visible. But you cannot give your best when you are running on empty. Prioritize your well-being. Seek encouragement. Release impossible expectations.

Today, take a deep breath and let go of at least one unrealistic standard you’ve been holding yourself to. Focus instead on being present, being real, and embracing the journey with an open heart.

2025 is our year to thrive and grow. I’ve created courses, videos, and a supportive space to help you navigate this path with confidence. Send me a DM, and let’s take this journey together.

Remember, perfection is not the goal. Connection is. Love is. Trust is. And you, just as you are, are more than enough.
