Have you ever ended a friendship because the other person was “too nice”?
It sounds strange, but it happens more often than you’d think. I once had a friend tell me that she had to end our relationship because I was “too nice.” I’ve also heard others say the same thing—breaking off relationships because the person was always there for them or checked in regularly.
Why does this happen?
These emotional reactions often stem from triggers we haven’t addressed. A trigger is an emotional response rooted in something deep within us—an imprint from a past experience. For example, one of my triggers used to be when someone implied that women should be submissive. To me, that phrase meant being treated as a servant, and it instantly set off a defensive reaction. I was fighting a battle from my past, not the present.
What about you? Do you recognize your own emotional triggers that may have caused you to sabotage relationships—romantic, platonic, or even professional? Maybe someone said something that set you off, and instead of communicating how you felt, you cut ties. If so, you’re not alone.
The key is to acknowledge your triggers and seek help to work through them. Therapy and self-reflection can help you understand why certain things set you off and how to manage your reactions. Healing those triggers can open the door to more meaningful and lasting connections.
So, if you’ve found yourself pushing people away, perhaps it’s time to pause and consider seeking help. Because the truth is, we all need connection, and the more we nurture those relationships, the richer and more fulfilled our lives become.
